Key Facts

  • Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM): Launched on 2 October 2014.

  • Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS): Observed annually since 2017.

  • SHS 2026: Launched on 17 September 2026.

  • Campaign period: 17 September – 2 October 2026.

  • Theme: “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat.”

  • Approach: Whole of Government + Whole of Society.

  • Main focus: Collective ownership, youth participation, waste management, behavioural change and sustained cleanliness.


 Swachh Bharat Mission

Two major components:

  • SBM-Grameen (SBM-G): Rural sanitation, ODF sustainability, solid & liquid waste management.

  • SBM-Urban (SBM-U): Urban sanitation, waste management and clean public spaces.


SHS 2026 — Five Core Pillars

  1. Transformation of Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) & Clean Public Places

    • Cleaning and transformation of garbage-vulnerable/neglected locations.

    • Covers markets, schools, hospitals, transport hubs, parks and water bodies.

    • Public/community toilets assessed using FACES:

      • F – Functional

      • A – Accessible

      • C – Clean

      • E – Eco-friendly

      • S – Safe

  2. Swachh Paathshala – Yuva for Swachhata

    • Youth and students as key participants.

    • Classes 6–12 to participate in Swachhata Gyan Yatras.

    • Focus on sanitation, hygiene, handwashing, menstrual hygiene and water conservation.

  3. SafaiMitra Suraksha Seva Evam Samman Shivirs

    • Health services and safety equipment for sanitation workers.

    • Welfare linkages for SafaiMitras and their families.

  4. Jan Bhagidari for Swachhata

    • Awareness of Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

    • Four-way source segregation.

    • Home composting.

    • Campaigns against littering and single-use plastics.

    • Rallies, human chains, pledges and collection drives.

  5. Swachhata Se Samriddhi

    • Focus on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

    • Kabaad Se Jugaad: Useful products from discarded materials.

    • Kabaad Se Kala: Art from waste.
